Scripts for raising sponsorship, CPT, and timelines at work.
Managers rarely say no to sponsorship, they say 'I do not know how'. Remove the unknowns. Each script below is short, gives the company a defined action, and names the deadline.
Script: raising sponsorship for the first time
Subject: My work authorization timeline and a small ask. Body: My current authorization runs through [date]. To keep working without a gap, the company would need to [file X] by [date]. The steps are [1, 2, 3], the estimated cost is [amount], and I have already prepared my documents. Can we set 20 minutes with you and HR this week?
Script: asking for an E-Verify confirmation
Subject: E-Verify enrollment question for my STEM OPT filing. Body: My STEM OPT application requires the company's E-Verify number. Could you or HR confirm the number and enrollment date? I need it before [date] to file on time. Nothing else is required from the company for this step.
Script: requesting a job description letter
Subject: Short employment letter request. Body: I need a one-page letter on letterhead confirming my title, start date, hours per week, worksite address, and a two-sentence description of my duties. I have drafted it below so you only need to review and sign.
What to attach every time
- A one-page summary of the pathwayWhat it is, what the company does, what it costs.
- A dated timelineShow the deadline and the last safe date to act.
- A ready-to-sign draft letter
- Your attorney or advisor contactLet HR ask questions without routing through you.
Objection responses
| Objection | Response |
|---|---|
| We have never sponsored anyone | The filing is handled by counsel. HR signs two forms and provides the company details. |
| It is too expensive | Here is the actual fee breakdown, and here is what turnover would cost instead. |
| Can we decide later | The last safe filing date is [date]. After that the option closes for 12 months. |
| Legal needs to review | Happy to introduce counsel this week so legal talks to legal. |
Do not forget
- ·Give the company one defined action, not an open question
- ·Always name the last safe date to act
- ·Attach a draft they can sign rather than a request they must write
