Everything to gather before you apply to a Day 1 CPT program.

Most Day 1 CPT admissions delays come from missing paperwork, not from weak profiles. Work top to bottom, save each file as a PDF in a single folder, and name files 'Lastname_Document.pdf' so the admissions office never has to ask twice.

Identity and status documents

  • Passport biographic pageValid at least 6 months beyond your intended start date.
  • Current I-20 or DS-2019All pages, including the travel signature page.
  • Most recent I-94 recordDownload a fresh copy from the CBP I-94 site.
  • Visa stamp pageEven if expired, include it.
  • Prior EAD cardsOPT, STEM OPT, or any other work authorization you have held.

Academic records

  • Transcripts from every institution attendedOfficial or unofficial to start, official before enrollment.
  • Degree certificate or diplomaBachelor's minimum for most graduate Day 1 CPT programs.
  • Credential evaluation, if requestedWES or ECE course-by-course is the common ask.
  • English proficiency waiver evidenceA prior US degree usually waives TOEFL or IELTS.

Employment evidence for CPT

CPT must be tied to your field of study. Admissions and the DSO both need proof the role is real and related.

  • Offer letter or employment verification letterOn company letterhead, with job title, start date, hours per week, and address.
  • Supervisor name, title, email, and phone
  • Job description mapped to your degreeOne short paragraph connecting duties to program coursework.
  • Recent pay stubsTwo to three if you are already employed.

Financial and enrollment items

  • Financial documents for the I-20Bank statement or employer sponsorship letter covering the first year.
  • Deposit or enrollment confirmation
  • SEVIS transfer release date agreed with your current DSO
  • Health insurance plan detailsMany schools require proof or auto-enroll you.

Do not forget

  • ·Never begin work before your DSO issues CPT authorization on the I-20
  • ·Confirm the SEVIS transfer release date in writing with both schools
  • ·Keep one folder with every PDF so future filings reuse the same set
